Japan Scholarships (GRIPS) 2024 – Fully Funded – This Scholarship is available for Master’s & PhD degrees which is one of the scholarships, grants, and bursaries programs opened to international students in the Asia continent. this is a broad and fully funded Scholarship that covers; the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADBJSP), Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP), the Japan-WCO Human Resource Development Programme (Scholarship Programme) and ICHARM Research Assistantship

A Brief Description of the Japanese Fully Funded (GRIPS) Scholarship Program

Full grants and awards are opened to exceptionally eligible candidates who have been previously accepted to study at GRIPS. International students who apply for the Young Leaders program at GRIPS are also eligible to apply for Japanese Government Scholarships (MEXT).

Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis and only a limited number of grants are available for the fastest applicants. Whoever wants to apply for the scholarship must be a foreign student of a country recommended by the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General, university, or authority.

Scholarship Benefits and Coverage

The scholarship provides a monthly allowance worth 242,000 yen every month (rate for the fiscal year 2024; the amount is subject to change) to cover some expenses such as clothing, food, living, and other daily expenses. It also covers accommodation, insurance, medical care, transport, and various other expenses in relation to the study at GRIPS.

This allowance cannot be increased as it is fixed and covers family members. The grant also covers university application fees, admission fees, as well as tuition fees.

Scholarship holders will receive an economy-class air ticket from their countries of living to Japan upon enrollment in GRIPS and an economy-class air ticket from Japan to their home country at the end of their studies at the GRIPS.

Applicants to the scholarship must be under the age of 35, and be nationals of countries that Japan has diplomatic relations with. They must also be foreign students who do not live in Japan country. The Young Leaders program is available for qualified promising young public servants with considerable work experience in the field of public administration.

They must meet a minimum requirement of 3 years of professional experience in the mentioned field in the candidate’s country of origin. Applicants will be admitted based on their potential to become leaders in the near future in the country, to play an important role in the development of their countries, as well as to maintain the lasting friendship and trust of Japan and other countries of the world.

Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

  • Under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2024
  • Nationals of countries with which Japan has diplomatic relations
  • Non-residents of Japan

Scholarship Coverage & Benefits

  • Monthly stipend: for MP1, MP2, PA (during master’s course): JPY147,000; for PA (during Ph.D. course), G-cube, STI: JPY148,000
  • Application fee, admission fee, and tuition
  • An economy-class air ticket from your home country to Japan upon enrollment at GRIPS and an economy-class air ticket from Japan to your home country upon completion of your studies at GRIPS

Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Program (ADBJSP)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Under 36 years of age as of April 1, 2024
  • Nationals of ADB’s developing member countries
  • At least 2 years of full-time professional work experience after obtaining a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent at the time of the application deadline
  • Must not have received a master’s degree or have been enrolled in a graduate degree program

  • Monthly stipend: JPY147,000
  • Application fee, admission fee, and tuition
  • An economy-class air ticket from your home country to Japan upon enrollment at GRIPS and an economy-class air ticket from Japan to your home country upon completion of your studies at GRIPS
  • Establishment allowance: JPY25,000
  • Overseas student insurance and National Health Insurance.
  • Research allowance: JPY70,000 (MP1 and first year of MP2), JPY42,000 (second year of MP2)
  • Book allowance: JPY75,000 (MP1 and first year of MP2), JPY65,000 (second year of MP2)
  • Expenses related to travel: JPY25,000

Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Government tax officials from eligible developing countries (Note: Eligible countries are subject to change without notice)
  • At least 3 years work experience (as of March 1, 2024) in tax policy and administration in their home countries after obtaining a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent

Scholarship Coverage & Benefits

Japan-WCO Human Resource Development Programme (Scholarship Programme)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Preferably below 35 years of age as of April 1, 2024
  • Full-time government customs officials from eligible developing countries
  • Must be chosen and nominated by their Customs Administrations
  • At least 2 years’ work experience in customs policy and administration in their home countries at the time of enrollment at GRIPS

  • Monthly stipend: JPY147,000
  • Application fee, admission fee, and tuition
  • An economy-class air ticket from your home country to Japan upon enrollment at GRIPS and an economy-class air ticket from Japan to your home country upon completion of your studies at GRIPS

ICHARM Research Assistantship

Eligibility Criteria

  • In principle under 40 years of age as of October 1, 2024
  • At least one year of full-time work experience, or a master’s degree in water resource management or disaster risk management (Recommended).

Scholarship Coverage & Benefits

  • Monthly salary (approximately JPY200,000) plus seasonal allowance, housing allowance and commuting allowance will be provided as remuneration for research assistant work, depending on the individual’s work experience and on other considerations

Application instructions

All procedures for applying for Japanese government scholarships (MEXT) are carried out through consulates of your countries, Japanese embassies, or recommending authorities of eligible countries. The application deadline is usually around mid-October, however, every applicant should check with their Japanese embassies to know the date of submission.
